QX Series tools support both clockwise (CW) and counterclockwise (CCW) tightening applications. Programming a CCW tightening is straightforward, but the tool's Reverse function behaves differently, depending on the programming method used.
This article explains how to program a QX Series tool for CCW tightenings using the available programming interfaces and how to verify the expected tool behavior after programming.
This procedure applies to all QX Series tools programmed using:
- Tool keypad
- ICS software
- INSIGHT Connect Mobile App
- INSIGHT Connect Desktop App
- QCX Controller
Before You Begin
Before programming the tool:
- Verify the battery is adequately charged.
- Confirm the tool firmware is current, if required by your facility.
- Determine whether your application requires the Reverse function to rotate in the same or opposite direction as the tightening cycle.
- If using a QCX Controller, verify the tool is connected and communicating properly.
Program Using the Tool Keypad
- Create or edit a Torque or Angle strategy.
- Set the tightening direction to CCW.
- Enter the target value and any other required tightening parameters.
- Save the settings.
Note: When programming from the tool keypad, the Reverse operation is automatically set opposite the tightening direction.
Program Using ICS Software
- Create or edit a Torque, Angle, or Prevailing Torque strategy.
- Set the tightening direction to CCW.
- Enter the target value and any other required tightening parameters.
- Save the settings.
Note: For multi-step strategies, the Reverse operation is automatically set opposite the tightening direction of the first step.
Program Using the Mobile or Desktop App
- Create or edit a Torque, Angle, or Prevailing Torque strategy.
- Set the tightening direction to CCW.
- Enter the target value and any other required tightening parameters.
- Save the settings.
1. Change the Reverse Direction to CW (Optional)
If your application requires the Reverse operation to rotate clockwise:
- Select Reverse Parameters.
- Select Edit.
- Change the direction to CW.
- Save the settings.
Expected Tool Behavior:
- Tightening Direction: CCW
- Reverse Direction: CW
Program Using a QCX Controller
- Create a new Pset.
- Enter a name for the Pset.
- Select Forward Direction.
- Select Step 1.
- Select a Torque, Angle, or Prevailing Torque strategy.
- Enter the target value and any other required tightening parameters.
- Set the tightening direction to CCW.
- Select Save Step.
Expected Tool Behavior:
- Tightening Direction: CCW
- Reverse Direction: CW
1. Save the Pset
If these settings meet your application requirements:
- Return to the Create Pset screen.
- Select the Save icon.
- Assign the Pset to the appropriate Job.
2. Change the Reverse Direction to CW (Optional)
If your application requires the Reverse operation to rotate clockwise:
- Before selecting the Save icon, select Reverse Operation.
- Change Reverse Step Type to Custom.
- Change Rotation to CW.
- Select Save Step.
- Return to the Create Pset screen.
- Select the Save icon.
- Assign the Pset to the appropriate Job.
Verify the Program
After programming:
- Confirm the tightening direction is CCW.
- Verify the Reverse direction matches the values in Verify Expected Tool Behavior.
- Test the tool on a non-production joint.
- Verify the correct Pset is assigned to the active Job (QCX only).
Verify Expected Tool Behavior
| Programming Method | Tightening Direction | Default Reverse Direction |
|---|---|---|
| Tool Keypad | CCW | CW |
| ICS Software | CCW | CW* |
| INSIGHT Connect Mobile/Desktop | CCW | CCW (default) |
| QCX Controller | CCW | CCW (default) |
*For multi-step strategies, the Reverse direction is automatically set opposite the tightening direction of the first step.
