Upgrade QX Connect and QX Limitless Tool Firmware Using the INSIGHTqcx Cordless Controller

Use this procedure to update firmware on supported QX Connect and QX Limitless Series tools using an INSIGHTqcx™ Cordless Controller.

Keeping the tool and controller firmware current helps maintain compatibility and provides the latest available fixes and improvements.

Before You Begin

Before updating tool firmware:

Make sure the INSIGHTqcx controller is running the appropriate current firmware.
Make sure the QX tool has a charged battery installed.
Keep the tool awake during the update process.
Have the appropriate USB cable available for connecting the tool to the controller.
Log in to the INSIGHTqcx controller before connecting the tool.
Check the current INSIGHTqcx Software Release Notes for supported tool and controller firmware versions and any release-specific update instructions.

Important: QX Connect and QX Limitless tools use model-specific firmware. Always use the firmware identified for your tool family in the current INSIGHTqcx release information.

Important: Make sure a battery is installed and the tool is awake before connecting it to the controller. If the tool is not awake, the controller may not correctly detect or update the tool firmware.

Update Firmware from the Tool Update Screen

The Tool Update screen provides the primary method for updating tool firmware when the INSIGHTqcx detects a firmware mismatch.

Log in to the INSIGHTqcx controller.
Make sure the battery is installed and the tool is awake.
Connect the tool to the controller using the appropriate USB connection.
If the controller detects a firmware mismatch, review the firmware information displayed on the Tool Update screen.
Follow the on-screen instructions to begin the update.
Keep the tool connected, powered, and awake while the update is in progress.
Follow any prompts displayed by the controller.

Do not disconnect the tool or remove the battery until the controller indicates that the update process has completed.

Update QX Connect Tool Firmware

QX Connect tools use One Image firmware, which packages the applicable tool firmware for the QX Connect platform.

When updating a QX Connect tool:

Confirm that the controller is running a version that supports the required QX Connect firmware.
Connect the powered and awake tool to the controller.
Follow the Tool Update prompts displayed by the INSIGHTqcx.
Allow the update to complete before disconnecting or power-cycling the tool.
Follow any additional instructions provided by the controller or current release notes.

After the update, verify that the expected QX Connect firmware version is installed.

Update QX Limitless Tool Firmware

QX Limitless tools also use One Image firmware designed for the QX Limitless platform.

When updating a QX Limitless tool:

Confirm that the controller is running a version that supports the current QX Limitless firmware.
Connect the powered and awake tool to the controller.
Follow the Tool Update prompts displayed by the INSIGHTqcx.
Allow all required firmware components to update.
Follow any restart, power-cycle, or recovery instructions displayed by the controller or provided in the current release notes.

After the update, verify that the expected QX Limitless firmware version is installed.

Note: Release-specific instructions may apply when upgrading from an older firmware version. Always review the current INSIGHTqcx release notes before beginning an update.

Update Firmware from System Maintenance

You can also initiate a tool firmware update manually from the INSIGHTqcx System Maintenance menu.

Log in to the INSIGHTqcx controller.
Connect the powered and awake tool to the controller.
Select Menu.
Go to System Maintenance > Firmware Update.
Select the applicable tool update option.
Select the appropriate firmware file or update when prompted.
Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the update.

During the update, the controller may instruct you to wake the tool, pull the trigger, wait while the tool restarts, or power-cycle the tool. Follow all prompts before disconnecting the tool.

Note: If the required update option or firmware file is unavailable, confirm that the appropriate firmware for the tool family and current release is available on the controller. Refer to the current INSIGHTqcx release information for the required files and update instructions.

Verify the Firmware Update

After the update:

Allow the tool to complete any restart process.
Power-cycle the tool if instructed.
Reconnect the tool to the controller if necessary.
View the tool information on the INSIGHTqcx.
Confirm that the installed firmware matches the version expected for the tool family and current release.
Confirm that the tool starts and operates normally.

Check the current INSIGHTqcx Software Release Notes for the supported QX Connect or QX Limitless firmware versions.

If the Firmware Update Fails

If the firmware update fails, retry the update from the controller.

Also verify that:

The tool battery is adequately charged.
The battery remains installed during the update.
The tool is awake and communicating with the controller.
The USB connection is secure.
The INSIGHTqcx controller firmware supports the tool firmware being installed.
The correct firmware is being used for the tool family.

If the update continues to fail, check the current release notes for known issues, recovery procedures, or release-specific instructions before attempting additional updates.

Updating Older QX Tools

This procedure is intended for QX Connect and QX Limitless tools.
