Use this guide to set up and operate the Ingersoll Rand 140EP Engraving Pen.
The 140EP is a pneumatic engraving tool designed for writing or engraving on metals and other hard materials. Its slender body, soft rubber grip, and slide-style throttle provide control for precision marking applications.
Before You Begin
Before using the 140EP:
- Read Explore the 140EP Engraving Pen.
- Inspect the tool, stylus, air hose, and fittings for damage.
- Verify that the air supply, hose, and fittings meet the requirements for the tool.
- Make sure the stylus is properly installed and secure.
Note: Do not use a damaged tool, hose, fitting, or stylus.
Air Supply Requirements
Use an air supply that meets the requirements specified for the 140EP.
Current product specifications include:
| Specification | Requirement |
|---|---|
| Minimum hose inside diameter | 5/32 in. (4 mm) |
| Air inlet | 1/4 in. NPTF |
| Air consumption at load | 1 cfm |
Refer to the 140EP Product Information for complete air-supply and operating requirements.
Important: The pressure available at the tool while it is operating can be different from the pressure shown at the regulator when the tool is stopped. If tool performance is reduced, see Dynamic Air Pressure for information about checking the air supply at the tool.
Set Up the Tool
- Verify that the tool is disconnected from the air supply.
- Inspect the air inlet and air-supply connection for dirt or debris.
- Lubricate the tool as specified in Maintaining the 140EP Engraving Pen.
- Connect the appropriate air hose and fitting.
- Verify that all connections are secure.
- Connect the tool to the air supply.
The tool is now ready for operation.
Use the Engraving Pen

- Position the stylus at the location to be marked.
- Operate the slide-style throttle to start the tool.
- Guide the stylus across the work surface to create the desired marking.
- Release the throttle to stop the tool.
- Disconnect the air supply when engraving is complete.
Tip: Engraving results can vary based on the material, stylus condition, and operator technique. Test the tool on a representative piece of material when possible before engraving the final workpiece.
