Regular inspection, cleaning, and lubrication help prevent premature wear and maintain the efficiency of Ingersoll Rand® RTS Connect mechanical pulse tools.
Use this article with the existing IR lubrication demonstration and the manuals for your exact model. Internal repair beyond the lubrication procedure belongs in the separate authorized-service instructions.
Safety Notice
Remove the battery before inspection, lubrication, accessory changes, or storage. Allow moving parts to stop, and follow the applicable tool safety instructions.
Customers may perform the lubrication procedure as part of routine maintenance. Refer damaged components and repairs beyond this procedure to an Ingersoll Rand Authorized Service Center.
Before You Begin
- Identify the tool model and obtain its applicable product and parts manuals.
- Confirm that the lubrication demonstration applies to the tool.
- Review the complete video before removing components.
- Prepare a clean work surface where removed components can be kept in order.
Tools & Materials
For the procedure demonstrated in the video:
- T15 Torx driver
- IR #105 grease
- Suitable grease dispenser matching the application shown in the video
- Clean wiping cloths
- Equipment capable of tightening the hammer-case screws to the model-specific specification
Lubrication Demonstration
The written steps below accompany the demonstration. Use the video to identify components, lubrication locations, and their orientation.
Procedure
1. Inspect and Prepare the Tool
Remove the battery. Inspect the tool, drive, accessory, and retaining mechanism for damage or excessive wear. Arrange service if damage is found.
Keep gripping surfaces dry and free of grease, and keep cooling openings unobstructed.
2. Remove the Hammer Case
Using a T15 Torx driver, loosen the four hammer-case screws.
Press down on the anvil while lifting the hammer case. Remove the screws and the washer located inside the hammer case.
3. Remove Old Grease
Wipe excess grease from the washer, inside the hammer case, and from the anvil.
Press the ring-gear washer down and lift out the impact mechanism. Wipe away the old grease, paying particular attention to the hammer, camshaft pilot, jaws, and gearing.
Wipe the ring-gear washer and ring gear. Confirm that the large washer is seated on top of the ring gear.
4. Lubricate the Gearing
Use IR #105 grease on the gearing and impact mechanism, as specified in the demonstration.
Apply grease to each planet gear at the locations shown. Rotate the gears a few times to distribute the grease and confirm that they turn freely.
5. Lubricate the Impact Mechanism
Orient the hammer with its small ball pockets at the 12 o’clock and 6 o’clock positions, as shown in the video.
Apply grease inside the cam paths at the 10 o’clock, 2 o’clock, 4 o’clock, and 8 o’clock positions. Apply grease to the camshaft pilot at 12 o’clock and 6 o’clock.
Follow the demonstrated application closely. Avoid adding extra grease, as excessive grease can slow operation.
6. Lubricate the Anvil and Washer
Position the anvil on the mechanism as demonstrated.
Apply grease to the bearing surface and a small amount to each anvil jaw. Reinstall the washer and lubricate it as shown.
7. Reinstall the Hammer Case
Lower the hammer case over the assembly. Find the correct alignment before pressing it down.
The demonstration describes a very small gap between the hammer case and housing as acceptable. If the gap exceeds approximately 0.5 mm, remove the case and check that the ring-gear components are aligned correctly.
8. Tighten the Hammer-Case Screws
Install the four screws and tighten them in a cross pattern to the specification in the applicable parts manual.
9. Confirm Reassembly
Check that the components are correctly installed and the hammer case is properly seated. Complete the applicable readiness checks before returning the tool to use.
Expected Tool Behavior
During lubrication, the planet gears should rotate freely after grease application.
During reassembly, the hammer case should align with the housing with only the small gap described in the demonstration. A larger gap requires an alignment check before completing reassembly.
When to Contact Service
Stop the procedure and contact Ingersoll Rand when:
- Components are damaged or excessively worn.
- Gears do not rotate freely.
- The hammer case will not align correctly.
- The correct lubricant, application quantity, or screw specification cannot be confirmed.
- The required work extends beyond the lubrication procedure.
