Use this guide to diagnose common operating problems with the V3121 IQV20™ Cordless Rivet Tool before requesting service.
Many rivet feeding, gripping, and jamming problems are caused by debris accumulation rather than tool failure. Before requesting service, make sure the tool has been cleaned and the recommended preventive maintenance has been completed.

Tool Will Not Turn On or LED Does Not Illuminate
Possible causes
- Battery not installed
- Battery discharged
- Battery not fully seated
- Damaged battery
- Tool requires service
Try this
- Install a charged battery.
- Verify the battery clicks into place.
- Test with another known-good IQV20 battery.
- Inspect battery contacts for dirt or damage.
If the tool still does not operate, contact an authorized Ingersol Rand Service Center.
Tool Enters Safe Shutdown Mode
The V3121 includes a protective shutdown feature that helps prevent damage. If the tool detects an internal obstruction, debris, or components that are not operating correctly, it enters a lockout mode and will not cycle until the condition has been corrected.
Symptoms
- Front LED flashes continuously.
- The tool does not operate when the trigger is pressed.
- After reinstalling the battery, the tool may briefly attempt one cycle before immediately returning to shutdown mode with the LED flashing.
Possible causes
- Internal obstruction
- Internal components out of position
- Excessive debris buildup
- Tool requires preventive maintenance
Try this
- Remove the battery.
- Inspect the nose assembly for visible debris or obstructions.
- Perform the recommended cleaning and preventive maintenance procedures.
- Reinstall the battery and test the tool.
- If the tool immediately returns to shutdown mode and the LED continues flashing, contact an authorized Ingersoll Rand Service Center.
Note: If cycling the battery allows the tool to briefly attempt a cycle before immediately returning to shutdown mode, the tool likely requires maintenance or service.
Rivet Does Not Set Completely
Possible causes
- Incorrect rivet size
- Incorrect nose piece
- Rivet material exceeds tool capability
- Worn nose piece
- Dirty or worn jaws
Try this
- Verify the rivet size.
- Install the correct nose piece.
- Confirm the rivet material is supported.
- Replace worn accessories if necessary.
- Inspect the jaws for excessive wear.
- Clean debris from the jaw assembly.
Mandrels Do Not Feed Correctly
Possible causes
- Mandrel collector is full
- Debris inside the nose
- Damaged nose piece
Try this
- Empty the collector.
- Clean the nose assembly. If necessary, perform the preventive maintenance procedure to clean debris from the jaw assembly.
- Inspect the nose piece.
Mandrels Become Jammed
Although the V3121 is designed for jam-resistant operation, jams may occasionally occur due to damaged rivets or debris.
Try this
- Remove the battery.
- Clear the jam.
- Inspect the nose for damage.
- Verify the correct rivet size.
- Inspect the jaw assembly for metal filings or debris.
- Perform the recommended preventive maintenance if jamming continues.
Note: Do not force the mechanism.
Tool Cycles but Does Not Pull the Mandrel
Possible causes
- Debris in the jaw assembly
- Worn jaws
- Incorrect nose piece
- Damaged rivet
Try this
- Verify the correct nose piece is installed.
- Clean the jaw pusher, jaws, and jaw housing.
- Inspect the jaws for wear.
- Try another rivet.
If the problem continues after performing the recommended preventive maintenance, contact an authorized Ingersoll Rand Service Center.
Reduced Runtime
Possible causes
- Low battery charge
- Aging battery
- Extreme temperatures
Try this
- Fully recharge the battery.
- Allow overheated batteries to cool.
- Replace batteries that no longer hold an adequate charge.
Poor Rivet Performance
Check for:
- Correct rivet size
- Correct nose piece
- Rivet material compatibility
- Damaged rivets
- Dirty nose assembly
- Debris in the jaw assembly
- Worn jaws
Clean the jaw assembly and inspect the jaws for excessive wear before replacing other components.
If performance does not improve after cleaning the jaw components, perform the recommended preventive maintenance before requesting service.
When Service Is Required
Stop using the tool if you notice:
- Cracked housing
- Unusual noises
- Smoke or burning odor
- Trigger malfunction
- Repeated jamming after cleaning the nose assembly and performing the recommended preventive maintenance.
- Failure to complete the rivet cycle
Note: Internal repairs should be performed only by an authorized Ingersoll Rand Service Center.
