Regular maintenance helps keep the V3121 IQV20™ Cordless Rivet Tool operating reliably while reducing downtime caused by worn components, jammed mandrels, or incorrect setup.
Most maintenance takes only a few minutes and can be completed during normal tool inspections.
Depending on the rivet material, rivet size, and production rate, some cleaning tasks may need to be performed more frequently to prevent debris buildup.

Note: Do not use a damaged tool.
Before Each Shift
Take a few moments to inspect the tool before use.
1. Inspect the Tool
Check for:
- Cracked or damaged housing
- Loose fasteners
- Damaged trigger
- Excessive dirt or debris
- Missing components
Verify that the:
- Correct nose piece is installed for the rivet size being used.
- Nose piece is fully tightened.
- Nose piece is not worn or damaged.
Note: When changing to a different rivet size, verify that both the correct nose piece and jaw pusher are installed. Using the wrong combination can prevent the tool from properly gripping, pulling, or ejecting the rivet pin. Refer to the tool's rivet size guide to determine the correct nose piece and jaw pusher combination.
2. Check the Battery
Inspect the IQV20 battery for:
- Damage
- Contamination
- Secure connection
Recharge or replace batteries that no longer provide normal runtime.
During Operation
Periodically inspect the tool throughout the day.
1. Empty the mandrel collector
The transparent collector makes it easy to monitor mandrel buildup. Empty the collector when it becomes approximately half full to help prevent feeding problems.
2. Keep the nose clean
Remove any metal chips or debris from the nose assembly. A clean nose helps ensure smooth rivet installation.
Cleaning frequency depends on the rivet material, rivet size, and production rate. In high-volume applications, some facilities clean the tool at the end of every shift to help prevent debris buildup and maintain reliable operation.
After Each Shift
1. Clean the tool
Wipe the exterior using a clean cloth.
If necessary:
- Use mild soap and water
- Avoid harsh solvents
- Never immerse the tool
Solvents can damage plastic components.
2. Inspect components
Check:
- Nose piece
- Mandrel collector
- Battery contacts
- Trigger operation
Replace worn or damaged components as needed.
Periodic Preventive Maintenance
For tools operating at high cycle rates, periodically clean the internal jaw components to remove accumulated metal filings and debris.
Inspect the jaws for:
- Excessive wear
- Damaged gripping teeth
- Metal debris between the jaw teeth
Replace worn jaws as needed.
Every 3,000 rivet installations
Perform preventive maintenance regardless of tool performance.
Inspect, clean, and lubricate the:
- Jaw pusher
- Jaws
- Jaw housing
Apply one small drop of oil to the back (smooth side) of each jaw. Avoid excessive lubrication, as excess oil can attract metal filings and affect rivet pulling performance.
This service removes accumulated debris and helps maintain reliable mandrel gripping and feeding.
Storage
Store the tool:
- Indoors
- In a clean, dry location
- With the battery removed if stored for an extended period
Protect the tool from moisture and excessive heat.
Service
The V3121 uses a brushless motor and requires very little routine internal maintenance. Most preventive maintenance is limited to cleaning and lubricating the jaw components as described above.
Note: Do not disassemble the tool beyond the recommended maintenance procedures. Internal repairs should be performed only by an authorized Ingersoll Rand Service Center.
