Once an IQi Series Smart Torque Arm has been installed and commissioned, configure it for your fastening application using the IQi controller.
This article explains how to verify the Smart Torque Arm connection, enable position-based fastening, configure a PSET and Job, record screw positions, and verify operation.
Note: If the Smart Torque Arm has not been installed and commissioned, contact your Ingersoll Rand distributor or service provider.
Before You Begin
Before setting up a fastening application, make sure:
- The Smart Torque Arm has been installed and commissioned.
- The Smart Torque Arm is connected to the IQi controller.
- The appropriate IQi screwdriver is connected and ready for use.
- You have the fastening requirements for your application, including the required tightening parameters and number of fasteners.
If you plan to use visual instructions to guide the operator through the fastening sequence, complete this procedure first, and then see Configuring and Operating an IQi Series Smart Torque Arm.
Verify the Smart Torque Arm Connection
Before configuring the application, verify that the IQi controller recognizes the Smart Torque Arm.
- Log in to the IQi controller.
- Open the Accessories menu.

Verify that the Smart Torque Arm appears as a connected device.
If the Smart Torque Arm does not appear, verify that the system is properly connected. If the problem continues, contact your Ingersoll Rand distributor or service provider.
Verify the Torque Arm Encoder Settings
- Open Communication Settings.

Select Torque Arm Encoder Settings.
- Verify that the encoder is enabled.

Verify that Source identifies the connected Smart Torque Arm.
- Verify that the correct Torque Arm Model is selected.

Save any changes.
Important: Do not change the Smart Torque Arm calibration or encoder configuration unless instructed by your Ingersoll Rand distributor or service provider.
Create or Select a PSET
A PSET defines the tightening parameters used for the fastening application.
- Open the PSET menu.
- Create a PSET or select an existing PSET for the application.
- Configure the required tightening parameters for your application.
- Save the PSET.
Create or Select a Job
A Job defines how the PSET or PSETs will be used during the fastening process.
- Create a new Job or open an existing Job.
- Add the required PSET.
- Open Interlocks.
- Enable the Torque Arm interlock.

Save the Job.
Enabling the Torque Arm interlock allows the system to use the Smart Torque Arm position as part of the fastening process.
Set the Batch Count
The Batch Count identifies how many successful fastening cycles are required for the PSET.
- In the Job, locate the PSET you will use for tightening.

Select the edit icon.

Set Batch Count to the number of fasteners that use that PSET.
For example, if the PSET will be used to tighten four screws, set Batch Count to 4.
Set the Screw Position Tolerance
Use Screw Position to define the acceptable positional tolerance for each fastening point.
The position tolerance determines how close the Smart Torque Arm must be to a recorded fastening location before the tool can run.
- Locate the Screw Position setting.

Select the appropriate tolerance for the application.
Choose a tolerance that allows normal positioning of the tool while maintaining sufficient separation between fastening locations.
Record the Screw Positions
After configuring the PSET and Job, teach the system the physical location of each fastener.
- Move the Smart Torque Arm to the first fastening location.
- Select the + icon to capture and store the position.
- Move the arm to the next fastening location.
- Select the + icon again.

Repeat until all fastening positions for the PSET have been recorded.
- Return to the previous screen.
- Select Save.
The number of recorded fastening positions should correspond to the Batch Count for the PSET.
Verify the Fastening Sequence
Test the Job before using it for production.
- Return to the Home screen.
- Select the configured Job.
- Move the Smart Torque Arm toward the first programmed fastening location.
- Verify that the tool remains disabled when it is outside the acceptable position.
- Move the tool into the correct fastening position.
- Verify that the tool becomes enabled.
- Complete the fastening.
- Move to the next programmed location.
- Repeat until the Job is complete.
After a successful fastening, the system advances to the next required fastening location.
If the tool does not become enabled at the expected location, verify the programmed screw position and position tolerance. If the Smart Torque Arm itself appears to require recalibration or reconfiguration, contact your Ingersoll Rand distributor or service provider.
Using Multiple PSETs
A Job can contain multiple PSETs when different groups of fasteners require different tightening parameters.
For each PSET:
- Configure the appropriate tightening parameters.
- Set the correct Batch Count.
- Define the required fastening positions.
- Confirm the PSET order within the Job.
The fastening sequence follows the PSET order defined in the Job.
