Proper setup helps your Ingersoll Rand® 440 Series Air Extended Angle Grinder deliver reliable performance while reducing the risk of damage to the tool, abrasive, or workpiece.
Use this guide to prepare your 444, 4445, or 445 grinder for operation and follow the Product Information and Safety manuals for complete requirements.
Safety Notice
Before using the grinder, read and understand the 440 Series Grinder Product Information and Air Grinder Safety Information.
Always turn off the air supply, bleed the air pressure, and disconnect the air supply hose before installing, removing, or adjusting an accessory or performing maintenance.
For models 4445 and 445, tighten the guard screw to 88.5 in-lb (10 Nm) before each use.
Before You Begin
Make sure you have:
- A clean, regulated compressed-air supply
- 1/4-inch NPT fitting
- Minimum 3/8-inch air hose
- Air supply capable of providing 90 psi at the tool
- Compatible abrasive for your specific grinder model
- Required personal protective equipment
- IR #10 Air Tool Oil if an inline lubricator is not being used
The 440 Series is designed for material removal or cutting using a rotating abrasive wheel that meets the specifications for the tool.
Step 1: Prepare the Air Supply
The 440 Series requires a properly sized and maintained compressed-air system.
Before connecting the grinder:
- Make sure the air supply line is sized to provide the required operating pressure at the tool inlet.
- Drain condensate from low points in the piping, air filter, and compressor tank.
- Verify that the system includes an air filter and regulator.
- Use an inline lubricator when available.
- Install a properly sized safety air fuse upstream of the hose.
- Use an anti-whip device on hose couplings that do not have an internal shutoff.
The tool uses a 1/4-inch NPT fitting and requires a minimum 3/8-inch hose.
Important: Air pressure should be measured at the tool while it is operating. Restrictions, undersized hoses, fittings, or other components can reduce the pressure reaching the tool and affect performance.
Step 2: Lubricate the Air Motor
If you are not using an inline lubricator, manually lubricate the air motor before use.
- Disconnect the tool from the air supply.
- Add 5–10 drops of IR #10 Air Tool Oil through the air inlet.
- Reconnect the air supply.
- Run the tool for a few seconds to distribute the oil through the motor.
For extended operation without an inline lubricator, reapply oil approximately every hour of use.
For complete lubrication intervals and angle-head lubrication instructions, see Maintaining Your 440 Series Angle Grinder.
Step 3: Select the Correct Abrasive
Use an abrasive that is compatible with your grinder's wheel diameter, arbor, and operating speed.
| Model | Wheel Diameter | Arbor Size | Free Speed |
|---|---|---|---|
| 444 | 4 in. (100 mm) | 3/8"-24 | 14,000 rpm |
| 4445 | 4.5 in. (115 mm) | 5/8"-11 | 12,000 rpm |
| 445 | 5 in. (125 mm) | 5/8"-11 | 12,000 rpm |
The 444 Series uses Type 27 wheels with a maximum wheel thickness of 1/4 inch (6.4 mm).
Never use an abrasive that is not rated for the speed or configuration of your specific tool. Refer to the Product Information and Safety manuals for complete abrasive requirements.
Step 4: Install the Abrasive
Before installing or changing an abrasive:
- Turn off the air supply.
- Bleed the air pressure.
- Disconnect the air supply hose.
- Verify that the abrasive is the correct type and size for your model.
- Inspect the abrasive for damage before installation.
- Use the spindle lock to secure the spindle while installing the abrasive.
- Make sure the abrasive is properly secured before reconnecting the air supply.
The spindle lock allows abrasive changes using a single wrench.
Step 5: Position and Check the Guard
The 440 Series includes an adjustable swivel guard so you can change its orientation for the application.
Before operating the grinder:
- Make sure the correct guard is installed.
- Position the guard appropriately for the work being performed.
- Make sure the guard is securely fastened.
- On models 4445 and 445, tighten the guard screw to 88.5 in-lb (10 Nm) before each use.
Do not operate the grinder with an improperly installed or unsecured guard.
Step 6: Position the Auxiliary Handle
The auxiliary handle can be installed for right- or left-handed operation.
Choose the position that provides appropriate control and access for the application, and make sure the handle is secure before operating the grinder.
Step 7: Connect and Check the Tool
Once the abrasive, guard, and auxiliary handle are properly installed:
- Make sure the throttle is released.
- Connect the tool to the air supply.
- Check the hose and connections for leaks or damage.
- Make sure the air supply provides the required pressure at the tool.
- Run the grinder briefly before beginning work and check for unusual vibration, noise, or other abnormal operation.
If the grinder does not operate normally, stop using it and disconnect the air supply before inspecting the setup.
Using the Grinder
The 440 Series is designed for grinding and material-removal applications, particularly where the extended angle head provides access to confined or difficult-to-reach areas.
During operation:
- Maintain control of the tool using the main grip and auxiliary handle.
- Keep the guard properly positioned.
- Do not exceed the rated speed of the abrasive.
- Do not force the grinder into the workpiece.
- Keep the air hose positioned where it will not interfere with the work.
- Stop using the tool if you notice unusual noise, vibration, loss of power, or other abnormal operation.
If tool performance decreases, first verify the air supply and lubrication before assuming the grinder requires repair.
After Use
When you finish using the grinder:
- Turn off the air supply.
- Bleed the air pressure.
- Disconnect the air hose.
- Inspect the tool and abrasive for visible damage.
- If an inline lubricator is not being used, add IR #10 Air Tool Oil before storage to help prevent corrosion.
- Store the grinder in a clean, dry location.
For routine inspection, lubrication intervals, and preventive maintenance, see Maintaining Your 440 Series Angle Grinder.
When to Contact Service
Stop using the grinder if you find damage, excessive vibration or noise, or another condition that cannot be corrected through normal setup or maintenance.
Tool repair and service should be performed by an Ingersoll Rand Authorized Service Center.
