Regular maintenance helps your Ingersoll Rand® 440 Series Air Extended Angle Grinder deliver consistent performance and reduces unnecessary wear.
Use this guide to maintain 444, 4445, and 445 grinders. Always follow the 440 Series Grinder Product Information and Air Grinder Safety Information for complete instructions and safety requirements.
Safety Notice
Before performing maintenance:
- Turn off the air supply.
- Bleed the air pressure.
- Disconnect the air supply hose from the tool.
Allow the tool to stop completely before inspecting, cleaning, lubricating, or adjusting it.
Maintenance Schedule
Use the following intervals as a quick reference.
| Interval | Maintenance |
|---|---|
| Before each use | Inspect the tool, guard, abrasive, auxiliary handle, air hose, and connections. Lubricate the air motor if an inline lubricator is not being used. |
| Every hour during extended use | Reapply air tool oil if an inline lubricator is not being used. |
| Every 8 hours of operation | Lubricate the angle head with the specified grease. |
| After use | Clean and inspect the tool. Lubricate the air motor before storage if an inline lubricator is not being used. |
| As needed | Drain moisture from the air system and inspect hoses, fittings, and other air-supply components. Replace damaged or worn components. |
Before Each Use
Inspect the grinder before connecting it to the air supply.
Check:
- Tool housing for visible damage
- Air hose and fittings for damage, wear, or leaks
- Guard for correct installation and secure attachment
- Auxiliary handle for secure attachment
- Abrasive for damage or excessive wear
- Spindle and mounting components for visible damage
- Throttle for proper movement
For models 4445 and 445, tighten the guard screw to 88.5 in-lb (10 Nm) before each use.
Do not operate the grinder if the tool, guard, abrasive, or another component is damaged.
Lubricate the Air Motor
Proper lubrication helps protect the air motor from wear and corrosion.
If You Use an Inline Lubricator
Check the lubricator regularly and make sure it contains the correct lubricant and is operating properly.
Use IR #10 Air Tool Oil or the lubricant specified in the Product Information Manual.
If You Do Not Use an Inline Lubricator
Manually lubricate the tool:
- Disconnect the grinder from the air supply.
- Add 5–10 drops of IR #10 Air Tool Oil into the air inlet.
- Reconnect the air supply.
- Run the tool briefly to distribute the oil.
Lubricate the air motor before each use.
During extended operation, reapply the oil approximately once every hour.
Lubricate the tool again before storage.
Lubricate the Angle Head Every 8 Hours
The angle head requires regular grease lubrication.
Every 8 hours of operation:
- Disconnect the grinder from the air supply.
- Locate the grease fitting on the angle head.
- Apply IR #67 Grease through the grease fitting.
- Rotate the spindle by hand while applying grease to help distribute it through the gearing.
Refer to the 440 Series Grinder Product Information for the lubrication location and complete instructions.
Maintain the Air Supply
Clean, properly regulated compressed air is important to grinder performance and service life.
Regularly:
- Drain condensate from low points in the air piping.
- Drain moisture from the air filter.
- Drain the compressor tank according to the compressor manufacturer's instructions.
- Check the regulator for proper operation.
- Inspect hoses and fittings for leaks, restrictions, and damage.
- Check the inline lubricator, if installed.
The grinder should receive 90 psi at the tool while operating. Restrictions or undersized air-supply components can reduce the pressure reaching the tool.
Clean the Grinder
Keep the grinder clean so dirt and debris do not interfere with normal operation.
After use:
- Disconnect the tool from the air supply.
- Wipe dirt and debris from the exterior.
- Clean around the air inlet, throttle, guard, spindle, and other exposed areas.
- Inspect the grinder for damage or excessive wear.
Do not allow dirt or debris to enter the air inlet.
Inspect the Abrasive and Guard
Abrasives and guards should be checked regularly and whenever an abrasive is changed.
Inspect the abrasive for:
- Cracks
- Chips
- Excessive wear
- Other visible damage
Make sure the abrasive is the correct size and speed rating for your specific grinder.
Inspect the guard for damage and make sure it is properly positioned and securely attached before operating the tool.
Never use a damaged abrasive or guard.
Before Storage
Before storing the grinder:
- Disconnect it from the air supply.
- Clean and inspect the tool.
- Remove accumulated dirt and debris.
- If an inline lubricator is not being used, add 5–10 drops of IR #10 Air Tool Oil through the air inlet.
- Run the tool briefly to distribute the oil.
- Store the grinder in a clean, dry location.
Proper lubrication before storage helps protect internal air-motor components from corrosion.
When to Contact Service
Stop using the grinder and have it inspected if you notice:
- Excessive or unusual vibration
- Unusual noise
- Significant loss of power that is not corrected by checking the air supply and lubrication
- Damage to the spindle, guard, throttle, housing, or other components
- Air leaks or other conditions that cannot be corrected through routine maintenance
Repairs should be performed by qualified personnel using appropriate Ingersoll Rand replacement parts.
