If your Ingersoll Rand® 440 Series Air Extended Angle Grinder is not operating as expected, use this guide to check common setup, air-supply, and maintenance issues before contacting service.
This guide applies to the 444, 4445, and 445 models.
Before You Begin
Before troubleshooting:
- Inspect the tool, abrasive, guard, air hose, and fittings for visible damage.
- Verify that the abrasive is correct for your grinder model and rated for the tool's operating speed.
- Make sure the guard and auxiliary handle are securely installed.
- Confirm that the air supply is connected properly.
- Make sure routine lubrication is up to date.
Always turn off the air supply, bleed the air pressure, and disconnect the air supply hose before adjusting the tool, changing an abrasive, or performing maintenance.
| Problem | Possible Cause | What to Do |
|---|---|---|
| Grinder will not run | Insufficient air supply | Verify that the compressor and air supply are operating and that the tool receives the required air pressure. |
| Restricted, damaged, or leaking air hose or fittings | Inspect the hose and fittings. Remove restrictions and replace damaged components as needed. | |
| Closed or improperly adjusted air-supply component | Make sure valves and other air-supply components are fully open and operating correctly. | |
| Internal tool problem | Disconnect the grinder from the air supply and contact service. | |
| Grinder has low power or runs slowly | Insufficient air pressure or airflow | Check hoses, fittings, filters, and other air-system components for leaks or restrictions. Use at least a 3/8-inch air hose and verify 90 psi while operating. |
| Air motor is not properly lubricated | Verify air-motor lubrication. If no inline lubricator is used, add 5–10 drops of IR #10 Air Tool Oil through the air inlet and run the grinder briefly. | |
| Internal tool problem | Discontinue use and contact service if performance remains low after air-supply and lubrication checks. | |
| Grinder makes unusual noise | Inadequate air-motor or angle-head lubrication | Disconnect the air supply. Verify air-motor lubrication and lubricate the angle head at the required 8-hour operating interval. |
| Damaged or incorrectly installed abrasive or mounting components | Inspect the abrasive and mounting components. Replace damaged parts and correct the installation as needed. | |
| Internal tool problem | Do not operate the grinder if unusual noise continues. Contact service. | |
| Grinder vibrates excessively | Damaged, worn, incorrect, or improperly installed abrasive | Stop the grinder and disconnect the air supply. Inspect the abrasive; verify it is the correct type and size and is securely installed. Do not use a damaged abrasive. |
| Damaged spindle or mounting components | Inspect the spindle and mounting components for visible damage. Contact service if damaged. | |
| Loose guard or auxiliary handle | Verify that the guard and auxiliary handle are secure. | |
| Internal tool problem | Discontinue use and contact service if vibration continues with a properly installed, undamaged abrasive. | |
| Abrasive does not fit or install correctly | Incorrect abrasive diameter, arbor compatibility, or speed rating | Use an abrasive with the correct diameter, arbor compatibility, and operating-speed rating for the model. Do not modify the abrasive or grinder components. |
| Dirty, damaged, or incorrectly installed mounting components | Clean and inspect the spindle and mounting components. Install components correctly; replace damaged components as needed. | |
| Guard will not position or stay secure | Debris, damage, or incorrect guard installation | Disconnect the air supply. Inspect and clean the guard and mounting area. Verify that the correct guard is installed and secure it according to the Product Information Manual. |
| Guard screw not tightened correctly on 4445 and 445 models | Tighten the guard screw to 88.5 in-lb (10 Nm) before each use. | |
| Guard cannot be secured | Do not operate the grinder. Contact service. |
Problems Keep Returning
Repeated performance problems can indicate an air-supply issue, inadequate lubrication, worn components, or a condition requiring service.
Before contacting service, verify that:
- The tool receives 90 psi while operating.
- The air hose is at least 3/8 inch.
- Hoses and fittings are not leaking or restricted.
- The air motor is receiving the required lubrication.
- The angle head is lubricated every 8 hours of actual tool runtime.
- The abrasive and guard are correctly installed and undamaged.
Keeping track of when the problem occurs and any unusual noise, vibration, or change in performance can also help technical support diagnose the issue.
When to Contact Service
Stop using the grinder and contact an authorized service provider if:
- The grinder will not operate after verifying the air supply.
- Low power continues after checking air pressure, airflow, and lubrication.
- Excessive vibration continues with a properly installed, undamaged abrasive.
- Unusual noise continues after lubrication.
- The spindle, guard, throttle, housing, or other components are damaged.
- The tool requires internal disassembly or repair.
Do not disassemble the grinder unless you are qualified to perform service-level repairs.
