Setting the Clutch on a QC Clutch Series Tool

The Ingersoll Rand® QC Clutch Series Cordless Tools use an adjustable mechanical clutch to control fastening torque. Set the clutch for your application before beginning production fastening, and verify the result using your facility's approved torque-verification method.

The clutch-setting procedure applies to both QCP programmable and QCN non-programmable QC Series tools.

Important: On QCP programmable models, INSIGHT™ Connect settings do not replace mechanical clutch adjustment. Fastening torque is controlled by the tool's adjustable clutch.

Before You Begin

Before adjusting the clutch:

Confirm that the tool's specified torque range includes the torque required for your application.
Make sure the battery has sufficient charge.
Install the appropriate bit, socket, or fastening accessory for the application.
Have an approved method available to verify the achieved fastening torque.
Review the Product Information and Safety Information for your QC Series tool.

Do not use the clutch setting alone as verification that the required fastening torque has been achieved.

Adjust the Clutch

Use the clutch adjustment mechanism to increase or decrease the clutch setting.

Locate the clutch adjustment area on the tool.
Access the clutch adjustment mechanism as shown in the QC Series Product Information.
Insert the appropriate clutch adjustment tool.
Rotate the adjustment mechanism in the direction indicated to increase or decrease the clutch setting.
Make a small adjustment.
Remove the adjustment tool before operating the QC Series tool.
Perform a test fastening using the actual or representative joint.
Measure the fastening result using your approved torque-verification method.
Continue making small adjustments and testing until the required fastening result is achieved.

Important: Do not assume that a particular clutch position or adjustment setting corresponds to a specific torque value. Actual fastening results can vary based on the joint, fastener, application, and operating conditions.

Verify the Setting

After adjusting the clutch, perform test fastenings before using the tool for production.

Verify that:

The achieved torque meets the requirements of the application.
The clutch shuts off consistently.
The tool and fastening accessory operate correctly.
The completed joint meets your organization's fastening requirements.

If the fastening result does not meet the required torque, adjust the clutch incrementally and test again.

Lock the Clutch Setting

QC Series tools include a lockable clutch adjustment to help prevent unintended changes after the required setting has been established.

After you have verified the correct clutch setting, secure the adjustment according to the instructions provided with the tool.

Do not change the clutch setting without rechecking the fastening result.

When to Recheck the Clutch Setting

Verify the fastening result whenever conditions that could affect the application change, including after:

Adjusting the clutch
Changing to a different fastening application
Changing fasteners or joint components
Performing tool maintenance or repair that could affect fastening performance
Identifying inconsistent fastening results

Follow your facility's procedures for any additional periodic torque verification.

QCP Programmable Models

QCP models provide additional configurable settings through INSIGHT Connect, including RPM and supported advanced tool parameters.

These settings are separate from mechanical clutch adjustment.

If You Cannot Achieve the Required Torque

If you cannot achieve a consistent fastening result within the required torque:

Confirm that the selected QC Series model covers the required torque range.
Check the fastening accessory for wear, damage, or incorrect installation.
Confirm that the battery has sufficient charge.
Inspect the tool for visible damage or abnormal operation.
Verify that the fastener and joint conditions are appropriate for the application.

Do not continue increasing the clutch setting beyond the operating range specified for the tool.
