Use this article to identify status-light and buzzer patterns on QC Series programmable clutch tools (QCP models). These patterns can help determine whether the issue is related to the battery, tool temperature, or an internal tool fault.
This article applies to QCP pistol and angle tools. It does not apply to non-programmable QCN models.
Safety Notice
Stop using the tool if it is damaged, repeatedly overheats, or displays an internal fault indication. Remove the battery before inspecting the tool. Internal repair and service must be performed by an Authorized Service Center.
Before You Begin
Before interpreting an error indication:
- Note the number of red flashes and whether the tool stops.
- Confirm that the battery is fully charged and securely installed.
- Record the tool model and the conditions under which the error occurred.
- For repeated errors, do not continue cycling the tool to try to clear the condition.
QC Programmable Clutch Tool Error Code Reference
| Status indication | Meaning | Recommended action |
|---|---|---|
| Red light flashes continuously with a buzzer. Flash pattern: 300 ms on, 300 ms off. | Battery low-voltage warning | Charge the battery or install a charged, compatible IQV20™ battery. |
| Tool stops. Red light flashes 2 times with a buzzer. Flash pattern: 1 second on, 500 ms off. | Battery shutdown protection | Remove the battery and install a charged battery. If the indication returns, contact an Authorized Service Center. |
| Tool stops. Red light flashes 3 times with a buzzer. Flash pattern: 1 second on, 500 ms off. | Battery voltage protection | Remove the battery and install a charged battery. If the indication returns with a known-good battery, contact an Authorized Service Center. |
| Tool stops. Red light flashes 4 times with a buzzer. Flash pattern: 1 second on, 500 ms off. | Circuit-board temperature protection | Stop using the tool and allow it to cool. If the condition repeats during normal operation, remove the tool from service and contact an Authorized Service Center. |
| Tool stops. Red light flashes 5 times with a buzzer. Flash pattern: 1 second on, 500 ms off. | Start switch or Hall board abnormality | Remove the tool from service. Contact an Authorized Service Center for inspection. |
| Tool stops. Red light flashes 6 times with a buzzer. Flash pattern: 1 second on, 500 ms off. | EEPROM read/write error | Remove the tool from service. Contact an Authorized Service Center for inspection. |
When the Tool Shows a Red Cycle Result
A red status indication at the end of a fastening cycle is different from an error-code pattern. It means the fastening result needs attention.
- Inspect the fastener and joint for damage, obstruction, or cross-threading.
- Confirm that the bit, socket, or accessory is correct for the application and fully seated.
- Verify the clutch setting using your approved torque-verification process.
- For QCP tools, review the programmed settings in INSIGHT Connect as appropriate.
- If failed cycles continue after these checks, have the tool and application reviewed by a qualified service or quality representative.
When to Contact Service
Contact an Authorized Service Center when:
- A 5-flash or 6-flash error occurs.
- A battery- or temperature-protection indication returns after the recommended checks.
- The tool is damaged or does not operate normally after a battery change.
- The tool produces repeated failed cycles or inconsistent torque results.
For general operating issues that do not display an error pattern, see Troubleshooting QC Series Cordless Clutch Tools.
