Routine inspection and basic care help QC Series cordless clutch tools deliver consistent fastening performance. This article applies to programmable QCP and non-programmable QCN pistol and angle tools.
For general operating issues that do not display an error pattern, see Troubleshooting QC Series Cordless Clutch Tools.
For coded warnings on QCP programmable models, see Understanding QC Programmable Clutch Tool Error Codes.
Safety Notice
Remove the battery before cleaning or inspecting the tool. Do not disassemble the tool or perform internal repairs. Tool repair and maintenance requiring disassembly must be completed by an Authorized Service Center.
Before You Begin
Gather the following before performing routine maintenance:
- Clean, lint-free cloth
- Approved battery charger
- A known-good IQV20™ battery, if available
- Approved torque-verification equipment, when required by your quality process
Inspect the Tool Before Each Shift
Before using the tool, inspect:
- The tool housing for cracks, loose components, or other visible damage
- The trigger and controls for normal operation
- The bit, socket, or other accessory for wear, damage, or poor fit
- The battery and battery contacts for visible damage, contamination, or corrosion
- The drive end for damage or excessive wear
Remove the tool from service if you find damage, loose components, or abnormal operation.
Keep the Tool Clean
Keep the tool exterior, drive end, and battery-contact area free of dust, oil, metal shavings, and other buildup.
- Remove the battery.
- Wipe the tool exterior with a clean, lint-free cloth.
- Carefully remove debris from around the drive end and battery-contact area.
- Reinstall the battery only after the tool and contacts are dry.
Do not allow contaminants to enter the tool housing. Internal cleaning, lubrication, clutch repair, and disassembly belong in the applicable restricted service procedure.
Check Accessories and Fastening Results
Use accessories that are appropriate for the tool, drive size, and fastening application.
Replace bits, sockets, and extensions that are worn, damaged, or do not fit securely. A worn or poorly fitted accessory can affect fastening quality and may contribute to failed cycles or inconsistent torque results.
Verify the clutch setting and fastening results according to your organization’s approved quality process. If the tool does not achieve consistent results after the clutch setting and accessory have been checked, remove it from service.
For clutch-adjustment instructions, see Setting the Clutch on QC Series Cordless Clutch Tools.
Care for Batteries
Use only compatible IQV20 batteries and chargers.
- Inspect batteries before use; do not use a battery that is cracked, leaking, damaged, or excessively hot.
- Keep battery contacts clean and dry.
- Charge batteries using the applicable approved charger.
- Remove the battery from the tool before storage or before the tool is transported.
If a low-voltage or battery-protection indication continues after installing a charged battery, see Understanding QC Programmable Clutch Tool Error Codes or contact an Authorized Service Center.
Store the Tool Properly
When the tool is not in use:
- Remove the battery.
- Store the tool in a clean, dry location.
- Protect the drive end and accessories from impact damage.
- Keep the tool away from conditions that may expose it to excessive moisture, contamination, or heat.
When to Contact Service
Contact an Authorized Service Center when:
- The tool is damaged, dropped, or has loose components.
- The tool repeatedly displays an error indication or stops during normal operation.
- The tool produces inconsistent fastening results after accessory and clutch-setting checks.
- Internal cleaning, lubrication, clutch service, or other disassembly is needed.
