QC Series QCP programmable clutch tools can be configured using the INSIGHT™ Connect app. Connect the tool to INSIGHT Connect using a USB-C connection to configure speed and other supported parameters for your fastening application.
This procedure applies only to QCP programmable QC Series tools. QCN models are non-programmable and do not require INSIGHT Connect.
Important: Programming a QCP tool does not set fastening torque. QC Series tools use an adjustable mechanical clutch to control torque. See Setting the Clutch on a QC Clutch Series Tool for clutch adjustment and torque-verification information.
Before You Begin
Before programming the tool:
- Make sure you are using a QCP programmable QC Series tool.
- Make sure the tool battery has sufficient charge.
- Install the current supported version of INSIGHT Connect on your computer or mobile device, as applicable.
- Have a compatible USB-C cable available to connect the tool.
- Set the mechanical clutch.
- Determine the settings required for your fastening application.
- Review the Product Information and Safety Information for your QC Series tool.
Connect the QCP Tool to INSIGHT Connect
- Open INSIGHT Connect.
- Connect the QCP tool to your device using a compatible USB-C cable.
- Select the option in INSIGHT Connect to connect to the tool.
- Wait for INSIGHT Connect to recognize the connected QC Series tool.
- Confirm that the correct tool is displayed before changing its settings.
If INSIGHT Connect does not recognize the tool, verify the USB connection and confirm that the required software and drivers are installed.
Configure the Tool Settings
After connecting the tool, open the available programming settings.
QCP tools support the following programmable parameters:
- Rundown RPM
- Tightening RPM
- Tightening Direction
- Reverse Disable
- Cycle Delay
- Soft Start
- Rehit Detection
Configure only the parameters required for your fastening application.
1. Set Rundown RPM
Rundown RPM controls tool speed during the rundown portion of the fastening cycle.
Set the rundown speed within the supported speed range for your specific QC Series model and according to the requirements of the fastening application.
2. Set Tightening RPM
Tightening RPM controls tool speed during the tightening portion of the fastening cycle.
Select a tightening speed appropriate for the application and within the supported range for the tool.
The available speed range varies by QC Series model. Refer to the specifications for your specific tool before selecting a speed.
3. Set the Tightening Direction
Use Tightening Direction to configure the required direction of rotation for the tightening application.
Confirm that the selected direction matches the fastener and application before operating the tool.
4. Configure Reverse Disable
Use Reverse Disable when the application requires the tool's reverse function to be disabled.
Confirm the required behavior for your application before enabling this setting.
5. Configure Cycle Delay
Use Cycle Delay to control the delay associated with subsequent fastening operation as supported by the tool.
Configure the delay according to the requirements of the production process.
6. Configure Soft Start
Use Soft Start to control the tool's initial operation as supported by the QCP programming settings.
Configure Soft Start according to the requirements of the fastening application.
7. Configure Rehit Detection
Use Rehit Detection to identify supported conditions associated with attempting to tighten a fastener that has already been tightened.
Configure this parameter according to the requirements of your fastening process.
Save the Settings to the Tool
After configuring the required parameters:
- Review the programmed settings.
- Save or send the configuration to the connected tool using INSIGHT Connect.
- Allow the programming process to complete before disconnecting the tool.
- Confirm that the settings have been successfully applied.
- Disconnect the USB-C cable when programming is complete.
Do not disconnect the tool while settings are being transferred.
Verify the Programmed Settings
Always verify tool operation after changing programmable parameters and before returning the tool to production use.
- Confirm that the mechanical clutch has been set and verified for the application.
- Install the appropriate fastening accessory.
- Perform a test fastening on an actual or representative joint.
- Confirm that tool speed, direction, and other programmed behaviors operate as expected.
- Check the tool's cycle-status feedback.
- Verify the completed fastening according to your facility's approved procedures.
If the fastening result does not meet application requirements, determine whether the issue involves the programmed parameters, mechanical clutch setting, or another part of the fastening process before making additional adjustments.
If INSIGHT Connect Does Not Recognize the Tool
If you cannot connect to or program the QCP tool:
- Confirm that the tool is a QCP programmable model.
- Check the USB-C cable and connection.
- Confirm that the battery has sufficient charge.
- Confirm that you are using a supported version of INSIGHT Connect.
- Confirm that the required QC Series drivers are installed when using the Windows desktop application.
- Disconnect and reconnect the tool, then try again.
If the tool connects but does not operate as expected after programming, see Troubleshooting a QC Clutch Series Tool.
If the tool displays a coded warning or error, see Understanding QC Programmable Clutch Tool Error Codes.
