The Ingersoll Rand® QC Clutch Series Cordless Tools use an auto-shutoff clutch to provide repeatable fastening for assembly applications. Proper setup includes installing a charged battery and the appropriate fastening accessory, setting and verifying the clutch, and confirming that the tool operates correctly before beginning production work.
These instructions apply to both QCP programmable and QCN non-programmable QC Series tools unless otherwise noted.
Before You Begin
Before setting up or operating the tool:
- Review the Product Information and Safety Information for your QC Series tool.
- Confirm that the tool is appropriate for the required fastening application.
- Inspect the tool, battery, and fastening accessory for visible damage or excessive wear.
- Make sure the battery is sufficiently charged.
- Select the correct bit, socket, or other fastening accessory for the application.
- Make sure the fastening accessory is properly installed and secured.
Do not use a damaged tool, battery, or fastening accessory.
Install the Battery
QC Series tools are compatible with the Ingersoll Rand IQV20™ battery and charger platform.
To install the battery:
- Make sure the tool trigger is not pressed.
- Align the battery with the battery interface on the tool.
- Slide the battery into position until it is fully seated and secured.
- Confirm that the battery is securely attached before operating the tool.
To remove the battery, use the battery release and slide the battery away from the tool.
Remove the battery before installing or removing accessories, making adjustments, or performing maintenance.
Install the Fastening Accessory
Use an accessory that is appropriate for the tool and fastening application.
QC Series tools are available with:
- 1/4-inch hex drive on pistol screwdrivers
- 3/8-inch square drive on angle nutrunners
Install the appropriate bit or socket and confirm that it is securely retained before operating the tool.
Replace worn or damaged fastening accessories before use.
Set and Verify the Clutch
QC Series tools use an adjustable mechanical clutch to control fastening torque.
Set the clutch for the application and verify the fastening result before beginning production work.
For the complete procedure, see Setting the Clutch on a QC Clutch Series Tool.
Important: Do not assume that a clutch position corresponds to a specific torque value. Verify the fastening result using your facility's approved torque-verification method.
Set Up a QCP Programmable Tool
If you are using a QCP programmable model, configure the required programmable settings before beginning production.
QCP tools support programming through INSIGHT™ Connect, including RPM and supported advanced tool parameters.
For connection and programming instructions, see Programming a QC Programmable Clutch Tool Using INSIGHT Connect.
Note: QCN models do not require INSIGHT Connect programming.
Check Tool Operation
Before beginning production fastening:
- Confirm that the battery and fastening accessory are securely installed.
- Confirm that the clutch has been set and the fastening result verified.
- For QCP models, confirm that the required programmable settings have been configured.
- Operate the tool on a test or representative joint.
- Confirm that the tool operates normally and shuts off as expected.
- Check the tool's status feedback after the fastening cycle.
- Verify the completed fastening using the method required for your application.
If the tool does not operate as expected, do not continue production fastening until the issue has been identified.
See Troubleshooting a QC Clutch Series Tool for additional guidance.
Operate the Tool
Once setup has been verified:
- Position the bit or socket securely on the fastener.
- Hold the tool securely and align it with the fastener.
- Press the trigger to begin the fastening cycle.
- Maintain proper engagement with the fastener while the tool is running.
- Allow the tool's auto-shutoff clutch to complete the fastening cycle.
- Release the trigger.
- Check the tool's cycle-status feedback before moving to the next fastener.
Do not force the tool or continue applying the trigger in an attempt to increase torque after the clutch has shut off.
Understand Tool Feedback
QC Series tools provide visual feedback to help operators monitor fastening cycles.
Depending on the tool configuration, the QC Series includes a multi-color status light or headlight that illuminates the work area and provides tool feedback. The Cycle Status Indicator provides pass/fail information following a fastening cycle.
Use the tool feedback together with your application's required quality and torque-verification procedures.
If the tool displays an unexpected warning or does not operate normally, stop using the tool and see Troubleshooting a QC Clutch Series Tool.
For coded warnings on QCP programmable models, see Understanding QC Programmable Clutch Tool Error Codes.
After Use
When fastening work is complete:
- Release the trigger and allow the tool to stop completely.
- Remove the battery before cleaning, adjusting, or storing the tool.
- Inspect the tool and fastening accessory for visible damage or wear.
- Clean and store the tool according to the recommended maintenance procedures.
See Maintaining a QC Clutch Series Tool for routine inspection, cleaning, battery care, and storage information.
