Use this guide to diagnose common performance and operating problems with Ingersoll Rand pneumatic impact wrenches.
Problems such as low power, low torque, failure to run, or failure to impact can result from the air supply, inadequate lubrication, contamination, worn components, or incorrect assembly.
Before disassembling or repairing the tool, verify the air supply and evaluate the tool's operation.
Important: Specifications, internal components, and service procedures vary by tool. Refer to the Product Information, Maintenance Information, and Parts Information for your specific model before disassembling or repairing the tool.
Before You Begin
Before troubleshooting:
- Inspect the tool, air hose, fittings, and connections for obvious damage.
- Verify that the tool has been maintained and lubricated according to its model-specific requirements.
- Make sure the forward/reverse control is fully engaged in the desired position.
- Use the correct air-supply requirements for your tool.

Step 1: Verify the Air Supply
Insufficient air pressure or airflow can reduce tool speed and torque and may be mistaken for a problem with the tool.
- Connect the tool to the air supply.
- Remove the socket or other accessory from the square drive.
- Run the tool at full free speed with no load.
- Measure the dynamic air pressure at the tool inlet while the tool is running.
- Compare the measured pressure with the operating requirements for your specific tool.
- Adjust or correct the air supply as necessary.
Many Ingersoll Rand pneumatic impact wrenches are designed for 90 psi (6.2 bar) dynamic air pressure, but always verify the requirement for your specific model.

Check the Hose Size
An undersized air hose can restrict airflow and reduce impact-wrench performance, even when the air supply is set to the correct pressure.
Tools with higher air consumption are generally more affected by an undersized hose.
Check the specifications for your specific impact wrench to verify the minimum hose inside diameter. Hose requirements vary by tool and should not be determined by drive size alone.
For example, many Ingersoll Rand 1-inch drive impact wrenches require a 3/4-inch minimum hose inside diameter for maximum performance, while other 1-inch models have different requirements.
Important: Always use the minimum hose size specified for your tool. Hose length, fittings, couplers, and other restrictions in the air system can also affect the pressure and airflow available at the tool.
2146MAX Series
The 2146MAX Series includes an integrated pressure gauge that can be used to evaluate the air supply while the tool is operating at free speed.
With no socket or accessory installed, run the tool at free speed and check the gauge:
- Green – Air pressure is in the recommended operating range.
- Yellow – Increase the air supply pressure and check again.
- Red – Decrease the air supply pressure and check again.

Step 2: Evaluate Tool Operation
With the tool running at free speed, listen and feel for signs of abnormal operation.
Check for:
- Excessive noise
- Unusual vibration
- Irregular motor operation
- Reduced free speed
- Air flowing through the tool without the motor running
Note where any unusual noise or vibration appears to originate. This information can help identify whether the problem is associated with the air motor or impact mechanism.
Step 3: Check Tool Performance
If the tool operates but appears to have reduced torque output, measure its performance using appropriate torque-testing equipment, such as a Skidmore or equivalent.
Compare the measured output with the published performance information for the specific tool.
If performance is below the expected range, use the troubleshooting table below to identify possible causes.
Troubleshooting

| Low power or low torque | Worn or broken vanes | Replace the complete vane set according to the tool's Maintenance Information. |
| Low power or low torque | Worn or broken cylinder or scored end plates | Inspect the cylinder and end plates. Replace damaged or excessively worn components according to the Maintenance Information. |
| Low power or low torque | Dirty motor components | Disassemble and clean the motor components according to the Maintenance Information for the tool. Reassemble and test the tool. |
| Tool will not run; air passes through tool | Forward/reverse valve is not positioned correctly | Make sure the valve is fully engaged in the selected forward or reverse position. If the tool has previously been disassembled, verify correct valve assembly and orientation. |
| Tool will not run; air passes through tool | Motor components are damaged or incorrectly assembled | Inspect the rotor, bearings, vanes, cylinder, spacers, and other motor components. Replace damaged parts and reassemble according to the tool's Maintenance Information. |
| Tool will not impact | Impact mechanism is not properly lubricated | Lubricate the impact mechanism according to the requirements for the specific tool. See Maintaining and Lubricating a Pneumatic Impact Wrench. |
| Tool will not impact | Impact mechanism components are worn or broken | Remove the hammer case and inspect the impact mechanism. Replace worn or broken components and lubricate during reassembly. |
| Tool will not impact | Impact mechanism is incorrectly assembled | Verify assembly using the Maintenance Information for the specific tool. Correct the assembly as necessary. |
2146MAX Series Service Note: If motor damage is found on a 2146MAX Series tool, Ingersoll Rand recommends replacing the Cylinder Rotor Pressure Gauge Assembly (2146-A3). Refer to the 2146MAX Series Maintenance Information for the applicable service procedure.
Check Whether the Tool Is Right for the Application
If the tool operates correctly after maintenance or repair but repeatedly experiences low power, excessive wear, or similar performance problems, verify that the tool is appropriate for the application.
For general maintenance applications, Ingersoll Rand recommends an impacting time of 3–5 seconds maximum. Longer impacting times can generate excessive heat and increase impact-mechanism wear.
If the tool routinely requires 10 seconds or more of impacting time to complete the application, consider selecting a larger or higher-torque impact wrench.
Also verify that:
- The tool's drive size and torque capacity are appropriate for the fastener and application.
- The tool is sized for the most demanding application in which it will routinely be used.
- The air supply provides adequate pressure and airflow for the tool.

- Stop using the tool if it is damaged or operating abnormally.
- Record the tool model and symptoms.
- Note any unusual sounds, vibration, or changes in performance.
- Refer to the Maintenance Information and Parts Information for your specific model.
- Contact Ingersoll Rand Technical Support or an authorized service provider if additional assistance is required.
