Regular lubrication and inspection help your Ingersoll Rand® 2955B2 Impact Wrench deliver consistent performance and reduce unnecessary wear.
Use this guide to maintain the 2955 Series and identify conditions that may require additional service.
Safety Notice
Before performing maintenance:
- Turn off the air supply.
- Bleed the air pressure.
- Disconnect the air supply hose from the tool.
Allow the tool to stop completely before inspecting, cleaning, lubricating, or adjusting it.
Always follow the 2955B2 Series Product Information and 2955B2 Series Maintenance Information for complete instructions.
Maintenance Schedule
Use the following intervals as a quick reference.
| Interval | Maintenance |
|---|---|
| Before each use | Inspect the tool, square drive, socket-retaining components, auxiliary handle, air hose, and fittings. Add 8–12 drops of IR #10 Air Tool Oil through the air inlet if an inline lubricator is not being used. |
| During extended use | Make sure the air motor continues to receive adequate lubrication. |
| Every 48 hours of actual trigger runtime | Lubricate the impact mechanism with 4 cc of Ultra-Performance Royal Purple Grease with Synslide. |
| After use | Clean and inspect the tool. Check the square drive, retaining components, hose, and fittings for damage or excessive wear. |
| Before storage | Lubricate the air motor if an inline lubricator is not being used and store the tool in a clean, dry location. |
| As needed | Drain moisture from the air system and inspect air-supply components for leaks, restrictions, wear, or damage. |
Important: The 48-hour impact-mechanism lubrication interval is based on actual trigger runtime, not 48 hours since the tool was last lubricated.
Before Each Use
Inspect the tool before connecting it to the air supply.
Check:
- Tool housing and handles for visible damage
- Auxiliary handle for secure attachment
- Square drive for damage or excessive wear
- Socket-retaining components for damage or wear
- Socket for cracks, wear, or other damage
- Trigger and controls for proper movement
- Air hose and fittings for damage, restrictions, or leaks
Do not operate the tool with damaged or excessively worn components.
Lubricate the Air Motor
The air motor requires regular oil lubrication. Use IR #10 Air Tool Oil.
If You Use an Inline Lubricator
Check the lubricator regularly and make sure:
- It contains the specified air tool oil.
- It is operating correctly.
- The tool is receiving adequate lubrication during operation.
If You Do Not Use an Inline Lubricator
Before each use:
- Disconnect the tool from the air supply.
- Add 8–12 drops of IR #10 Air Tool Oil through the air inlet.
- Reconnect the air supply.
- Run the tool briefly to distribute the oil through the motor.
Make sure the air motor continues to receive adequate lubrication during extended operation.
Lubricate the Impact Mechanism Every 48 Hours of Trigger Runtime
The 2955B2 impact mechanism requires periodic grease lubrication.
After every 48 hours of actual trigger runtime:
- Disconnect the tool from the air supply.
- Locate the grease fitting for the impact mechanism.
- Add 4 cc of Ultra-Performance Royal Purple Grease with Synslide through the grease fitting.
- Follow the lubrication procedure in the current 2955B2 Series Maintenance Information.
Do not base this interval simply on calendar time. A tool used intermittently may take considerably longer than two days to accumulate 48 hours of actual trigger runtime.
Do not overfill the impact mechanism or substitute another lubricant unless approved by Ingersoll Rand.
Maintain the Air Supply
A properly maintained compressed-air system helps protect the tool and allows it to deliver expected performance.
Regularly:
- Drain condensate from low points in the air piping.
- Drain moisture from the air filter.
- Drain the compressor tank according to the compressor manufacturer's instructions.
- Check the regulator for proper operation.
- Inspect the air hose and fittings for damage, leaks, or restrictions.
- Check the inline lubricator, if installed.
The 2955B2 requires a minimum 3/4-inch air hose and should receive 90 psi at the tool while operating.
Low airflow or pressure can reduce tool performance and may be mistaken for an internal tool problem.
Inspect the Square Drive and Socket Retainer
The square drive and socket-retaining components should be inspected regularly because they are subject to repeated impact loads.
Check for:
- Cracks
- Deformation
- Excessive wear
- Damaged retaining components
- Difficulty installing or retaining the socket
Replace damaged or excessively worn components before returning the tool to service.
Use only impact-rated sockets and accessories compatible with the 1½-inch square drive.
Inspect the Auxiliary Handle
The adjustable auxiliary handle helps the operator maintain control of the 2955B2.
Regularly check that:
- The handle is not cracked, bent, or otherwise damaged.
- The handle can be positioned correctly.
- The handle remains secure during operation.
- The mounting components are not excessively worn or damaged.
Do not operate the tool if the auxiliary handle or its mounting components cannot be secured correctly.
Clean the Tool
Keep the exterior of the impact wrench clean so dirt and debris do not interfere with normal operation.
After use:
- Disconnect the tool from the air supply.
- Wipe dirt and debris from the exterior.
- Clean around the air inlet, trigger, regulator, square drive, and other exposed areas.
- Inspect the tool for visible damage, loose components, or excessive wear.
Do not allow dirt or debris to enter the air inlet.
Before Storage
Before storing the 2955B2:
- Disconnect the tool from the air supply.
- Clean and inspect the tool.
- Inspect the square drive and socket-retaining components.
- If an inline lubricator is not being used, add 8–12 drops of IR #10 Air Tool Oil through the air inlet.
- Reconnect the air supply and run the tool briefly to distribute the oil.
- Disconnect the air supply.
- Store the impact wrench in a clean, dry location.
Lubricating the air motor before storage helps protect internal components from corrosion.
When Maintenance Is Not Enough
Routine maintenance may correct performance problems related to lubrication or the air supply, but some conditions require additional troubleshooting or service.
See Troubleshooting Your 2955 Series Impact Wrench if you experience:
- Reduced power or impact performance
- Tool will not operate
- Unusual noise
- Excessive vibration
- Air leakage
- Irregular operation
Important: Stop using the tool if a component is damaged or the problem continues after checking the air supply and completing the required maintenance.
When to Contact Service
Contact qualified service personnel if:
- The tool continues to have low power after verifying air supply and lubrication.
- The impact mechanism produces unusual noise or vibration.
- The square drive or socket-retaining components require repair or replacement.
- The trigger, regulator, motor, or impact mechanism requires internal service.
- Air leakage cannot be corrected through normal external maintenance.
- Internal disassembly is required.
Distributors, authorized service centers, and qualified technicians should refer to Servicing the 2955 Series Impact Wrench and the applicable Ingersoll Rand diagnostic and service information.
