Setting Up and Using Your 2955 Series Impact Wrench

Proper setup helps your Ingersoll Rand® 2955B2 Impact Wrench deliver the airflow and performance required for demanding fastening applications.

Use this guide to prepare the tool for operation, connect it to the air supply, install the socket, and operate the tool correctly.

Safety Notice

Before using the 2955B2, read and understand the Product Information.

Always turn off the air supply, bleed the air pressure, and disconnect the air supply hose before installing or removing a socket, adjusting the tool, or performing maintenance.

Wear the personal protective equipment (PPE) required for the application and work environment.

Before You Begin

Make sure you have:

A clean, regulated compressed-air supply
1/2-inch NPT air fitting
Minimum 3/4-inch air hose
Air supply capable of providing 90 psi at the tool while operating
Correct impact-rated socket for the fastener
Appropriate socket-retaining components
IR #10 Air Tool Oil if an inline lubricator is not being used
Required personal protective equipment

Caution: Do not use hand-tool sockets or accessories that are not designed for impact-wrench use.

Step 1: Prepare the Air Supply

The 2955B2 requires sufficient air pressure and airflow to deliver expected performance.

Before connecting the tool:

Make sure the compressed-air system is clean and properly regulated.
Drain condensate from low points in the piping, air filter, and compressor tank.
Check hoses and fittings for restrictions, damage, or leaks.
Verify that the air system includes appropriate filtration and regulation.
Use a minimum 3/4-inch air hose.
Connect the tool using the appropriate 1/2-inch NPT fitting.
Verify that the tool receives 90 psi while operating.

Important: Check pressure at the tool while it is running. A compressor may show adequate pressure while restrictions in hoses, fittings, filters, or other components reduce the pressure and airflow reaching the tool.

Do not exceed the maximum air pressure specified in the Product Information.

Step 2: Lubricate the Air Motor

Proper lubrication is required before operating the tool.

If an inline lubricator is not being used:

Disconnect the tool from the air supply.
Add 8–12 drops of IR #10 Air Tool Oil through the air inlet.
Reconnect the air supply.
Run the tool briefly to distribute the oil through the motor.

Step 3: Position the Auxiliary Handle

The 2955B2 includes an adjustable auxiliary handle to help the operator control the tool.

Before operation:

Position the auxiliary handle to provide appropriate control for the application.
Make sure the handle does not interfere with the workpiece or surrounding equipment.
Secure the handle before operating the tool.

The handle can be positioned around the hammer case to accommodate different operating positions and access requirements.

Note: Because of the size, weight, and torque output of the 2955B2, use the auxiliary handle whenever required to maintain safe control of the tool.

Step 4: Select and Install the Socket

Use only impact-rated sockets and accessories that are compatible with the 1½-inch square drive and suitable for the application.

Before installing a socket:

Turn off the air supply.
Bleed the air pressure.
Disconnect the air hose.
Inspect the square drive and socket for damage or excessive wear.
Verify that the socket is the correct size for the fastener.
Install the socket onto the square drive.
Secure the socket using the appropriate retaining components.
Confirm that the socket is fully seated and retained before reconnecting the air supply.

Do not use a cracked, excessively worn, or otherwise damaged socket.

Step 5: Set the Power Regulator

The 2955B2 includes a power regulator that allows the operator to adjust tool output.

Select an appropriate regulator setting for the application before beginning work.

The regulator affects tool output but is not a precision torque-control device. Final fastener torque should be verified using the method required for the application.

Important: Do not rely on a regulator setting alone when a specific final torque is required.

Step 6: Connect and Check the Tool

After completing the setup:

Make sure the trigger is released.
Connect the tool to the air supply.
Check hoses, fittings, and connections for leaks.
Make sure the socket and retaining components are secure.
Verify that the auxiliary handle is secure and appropriately positioned.
Run the tool briefly before applying it to a fastener.
Listen for unusual noise and check for excessive vibration or other abnormal operation.

If the tool does not operate normally, stop using it and disconnect the air supply before checking the setup.

Using the 2955B2

Position the socket fully over the fastener before operating the tool.

During use:

Maintain a stable operating position.
Keep control of the tool using the available handles.
Keep the socket aligned with the fastener.
Keep the air hose positioned so it does not interfere with the tool or work area.
Avoid unnecessarily prolonged impact operation after the fastener has stopped turning.
Stop using the tool if you notice unusual noise, excessive vibration, air leakage, or a significant change in performance.

The 2955B2 has a recommended torque range of 1,600–3,750 ft-lb (2,170–5,100 Nm) and a maximum torque rating of 4,500 ft-lb (6,100 Nm). Always make sure the tool, socket, fastener, and application are compatible.

Tightening Fasteners

When tightening:

Install the correct socket.
Position the socket fully on the fastener.
Maintain control of the tool.
Operate the trigger to tighten the fastener.
Release the trigger when the desired result is reached.
Verify final fastener torque using the method specified for the application when a defined torque value is required.

Do not use impact time or the tool's regulator position as a substitute for required torque verification.

Removing Fasteners

When loosening a fastener:

Make sure the socket is fully engaged.
Set the tool for the required direction of rotation.
Maintain control of the tool and auxiliary handle.
Operate the trigger until the fastener breaks free.
Release the trigger when impact operation is no longer required.

If a fastener does not loosen, do not continue impacting indefinitely. Verify the application, socket, air supply, and tool performance before continuing.

After Use

When work is complete:

Release the trigger and allow the tool to stop.
Turn off the air supply.
Bleed the air pressure.
Disconnect the air hose.
Remove the socket if appropriate.
Inspect the tool, square drive, socket, hose, and fittings for visible damage.
Clean dirt and debris from the exterior of the tool.
Lubricate the air motor as required before storage.

When to Contact Service

Stop using the tool if you notice:

Significant loss of power after verifying the air supply and lubrication
Unusual or excessive vibration
Abnormal impact-mechanism noise
Damage to the square drive or socket-retaining components
Trigger or regulator problems
Air leakage that cannot be corrected through normal setup
Other damaged or malfunctioning components
